Open-Source Closed for the Summer?

As we’ve mentioned in this space in the past, Google is preparing to launch their first volley into the war for your mobile conversations when their Android Operating System hits cell phones worldwide.  We’ve also mentioned once or twice (and by “we’ve” I mean “I’ve”, and by “once or twice” I mean “about 30 times”), [...]

$1000 for an iPhone program?

I don’t care how rich you are, what program for a phone is really worth $1000?
Let me list some programs that are around $1000:

Photoshop CS3 (graphic design, web design, movie editing): $975.99
Final Cut Studio 2 (Mac movie editing): $1299
TurboCAD (graphic design): $973.99

What do all these programs have in common? They are geared towards high [...]

Geeks Are Given A Reason To Like The Sun

I typically hate the sun. I’m pale, maybe a bit pasty (okay, plenty pasty), and all lights within 10 feet of my desk at the office are turned off. But if I had an iPhone, I’d start looking at the sun in a new light (har har).
The environmentally-conscious tech source EcoGeek has reported on an [...]

To iPhone or not to iPhone?

Obviously, the dominant story this summer is Apple’s release of the new 3G iPhone.  While there exist plenty of reasons why this remains the must-have gadget of 2008, there are certainly no shortage of reasons to consider waiting for one more model release before making the jump.

And The Results Are In! iPhone Battery Tests Rundown

The folks at Gizmodo have done a lovely job of rounding up all of the battery tests performed on the new iPhone 3G this week. The results are varied, namely due to the ridiculous combination of things you could be doing with it. One thing that rang true in all tests, however, is [...]

No iPhone news (I didn’t get one) but let’s talk more about the BlackBerry Thunder

No, I didn’t bow down to the Apple/AT&T gods and get a 3G iPhone. To me, it really wasn’t of a need or want. I already have a BlackBerry Pearl and its small profile and Enterprise support through my employer makes it the prime candidate for a cell phone. But will I [...]

Intel… NOT Inside?

Although this story falls more under the business side of technology that the truly “geeky” side (unless you’re one of those business geeks who drools over spreadsheets, business models and risk/reward analysis), it is still worth noting.  It looks like Apple has finalized their decision to not use Intel’s line of microprocessors in the next [...]

Verizon improves existing FiOS service and expands its broadband service

First off, for those who don’t have access to Verizon’s high-speed FiOS internet, there is great news! Gizmodo reports that Verizon plans to expand their internet service to more rural areas across the US by 2010, reaching more than 18 million homes. However, this fiber optic internet service isn’t quite cheap as Verizon [...]

iPhone really not $199?

I know you’ve probably had enough iPhone news, but breaking from Gizmodo, the iPhone is only $199 or $299 (16GB) for qualified customers only.

“AT&T just gave us new details on how their upgrading plans will work for the iPhone 3G. The company is treating the iPhone 3G pretty much just like any other phone in [...]

With iPhone 3G introduced, can Apple be stopped?

Popular Mechanics online released a fantastic article on Tuesday of this week detailing what might be next in line for the future of cell phones.  The basic premise of the article is that, if someone (like say, Google?) doesn’t come along quickly with a cheaper or more effective challenger to the iPhone, that Apple will [...]
