If you’re anything like me, you probably have a bunch of USB devices; Flash drives, cell phone chargers, mp3 connectors, external hard drives, humping dogs, printers, headphones… Just to name a few. But secretly behind closed doors masterminds have been working on a new portable standard for computer connectivity. That my friends, is USB 3.0.

Alright, so it wasn’t exactly secret… it was bound to happen sooner or later. But the time is now, and it’s about to come at you over 10 times faster than your current USB 2.0 devices. With a maximum throughput of 5.0Gb/s it basically trounces the current 480Mb/s standard. It also has basically taken a stranglehold of the market, leaving Firewire (which also just confirmed a new standard, but that maxes at 3.2Gb/s) in the digital dust. Even Apple dropped Firewire, which was basically Apple’s bread and butter for years, from many of their new models.

The great thing about USB 3.0 is that it integrates the power capabilities of USB devices in a much more efficient manor. The new standard will actually allow USB devices to stay in idle, sleep or suspended. They are also fully backwards compatible with USB 2.0

Look for “USB SuperSpeed” to be included on machines as soon as 2nd Quarter 2009 and the first devices to pop on your desk in 2010. For more information, visit TG Daily.
