Even more Apple Updates

If it sounds like we’re a little obsessed with Apple products here at technewsmadesimple.com, well, it’s because we are.  Everyone except Corey.  He still thinks Apple peaked in 1986 with the IIGS.  But it is true; Apple’s core business of desktops and laptops hasn’t really seen a major overhaul in quite awhile.

While the iPod, iPhone and Apple TV have all seen some serious upgrades in the past couple of years, the Macbook is due for their day in the sun.

Last week I brought up the topic of the Macbook Touch.  It seems that BusinessWeek is also jumping on the bandwagon of upgrading the Macbook line to build on their current 8.5% share of the home PC market – a pretty nice jump from 6.4% at this time last year.

To give you the quick Cliff’s Notes version of the BusinessWeek article, there are plenty of discussions in the computer world about what Apple could do to spice up their primary laptop line.  Aside from the touchscreen features, it seems like Apple could probably produce a smaller laptop – something along the lines of a Windows-based Ultra Mobile PC (UMPC) – that would still support all of the regular features of a Mac system at a lower price.

Would it be worth it?  Well, there are plenty of differing opinions on the majority of UMPC’s out there right now.  But as I mentioned last week, if Apple can find a way to produce a “Mini” system - especially if they incorporate touch-screen capabilities – and still manage to keep the full version of the Mac OS X on the system, it would look like a winner to me.
