SSD… Data… capacities… oh and power consumption!

So Just the other day Corey informed us that Solid State Drives were tested to consume just as much if not more power than it’s oldschool platter-based counterparts.. well now Engadget is reporting that Samsung has begun mass production of it’s 64 and 128 GB SSD Drives in both the 1.8″ and 2.5″ form factors… and what’s this? Lower power ratings than previously recorded at Tom’s Hardware.

To be specific, the new SSD’s are based off a different size flash chip, which will make them cheaper than previous SSD’s, as well as faster than current laptop hard drives. They are also rated to last around 20 times longer than those same hard drives, while using.. again.. FAR LESS power than current reports put SSD’s battery burden.

This means that in the upcoming months, you should see more SSD’s on the market and in machines other than the fad-tastic MacBook Air. Just think when you’re running to the arms of your loved one with a external hard drive in your hand, and you trip on the curb, the only thing broken will be their heart when you start crying like a baby. Unless you’re running on a huge magnet that is.
