Intel to launch new QPI CPU by 4Q08 (new Atoms too!)

Intel has plans to release the new Nehalem-based processors by the end of 4Q08 first found on Tom’s Hardware with the full story at Digitimes. What is so important about these new CPUs? The removal of the existing FSB which will be replaced with the QuickPath Interconnect (QPI) on an X58 NorthBridge chipset. The removal of the FSB for a QPI will shorten the data transfer rates. As I had explained earlier, data is moved from the CPU through the FSB to RAM, or the NorthBridge chip. The elimination of the FSB will remove the current resistance (electrical and thermal), which uses less energy and will make it faster (the shortest distance in this case, is the fastest).

In addition, Intel will release a low energy consuming dual-core Atom in September (a delay from the earlier projected release date of August). This low powered, dual-core processor will set the standard for laptops as it will provide raw computing power, combined with an extended battery life.
