The Insides of a Computer - What everything means

Video Cards:

Video cards are very basic physical cards that have an additional dedicated graphics processor as well as dedicated graphics memory. Like it is with RAM and CPU, the more graphics memory you have and the faster the graphics processor, the better the card and the more your system can handle as far as graphic processing (i.e. video making, visual arts design, video games). Basic cards are fairly cheap and most systems will get by with a 256MB video card, however gamers and visual design artists and movie makers will opt for something larger than 512MB.

There are 2 major manufacturers of video card processors: NVIDIA and ATI and there are 2 platforms in which you can manufacture a video card: AGP (accelerated graphics port at 4x or 8x) or PCI-e (peripheral component interconnect express at v1.1×16 or v2.0). While AGP is still around, PCI-e has dominated the video card market and will soon phase AGP cards out.

As I had mentioned, there are a few things to look for in a video card: amount of memory, core clock speed and stream processors. Tom’s Hardware has a great video card buying guide based off of price and performance.
